Gilmour’s Henry impresses in sprints

When a 1099 form comes up during this tax season, it can be stressful.

The difference with Dylan Henry is, with a decimal point added, 10.99 form is a first-class return.

The Gilmour junior turned in an outstanding sprint double April 15 at St. Thomas Aquinas’ Big Ox Invitational, winning the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.99 seconds and the 200 with a 22.61.

“In the 100-meter race, he was actually fifth out of the blocks,” Lancers coach Jim Chappelle said. “So he didn’t have a great start, but once he got out of his drive phase, he just powered his way past the field.”

For Henry, a returning first-team News-Herald allstar and two-time state qualifier in 200, it was a massive mid-April statement of intent, including this area’s first sub-11 FAT time of 2017.

“He’s been doing a really good job this year starting with indoors,” Chappelle said. “He qualified for the state indoors and had podiums in the 60 meters and the 200 (in Divisions II/III).

“And the primary reason for his improvement is he’s been doing a lot of race breakdowns with his sprint coach, Greg Poston. They’ve been breaking his sprints all the way down to his start to his drive phase to his finish. And he’s also working a lot with the angles on his arms. It’s really making a difference.”

Title confusion solved

under the impression it was 93-91 Madison after 4x4.

Officially, Madison won four events for 40 points, plus 40 for five outright second places and 23 in other events for a total of 103 points. Mayfield won seven events for 70 points, plus 15 for an outright second and a tie for second and 16 in other events for a total of 101.

Honor roll

A look at a few of the top performances by area athletes from meets held this past week:

• Confounding team standings situation aside, Madison turned in a strong performance with nine top twos. The Blue Streaks’ 4x8 quartet of A.J. Dietrich, Nick Amos, Owen Hennessey and Marcus Horton recorded an 8:21.11 to take that event, which is also good for the area’s secondbest time in the event thus far in 2017 behind Mentor.

• Other area winners at the Perry Relays not already mentioned in coverage were Riverside’s high jump relay and Wickliffe’s weight relay.

• Area top-two placers at the Aurora Greenmen Invitational were North’s Jakab Pengal (second, 110 hurdles) and Chris Beemiller (second, discus) and Berkshire’s Kody West (second, 800 and 1,600).

• Area winners at the South Invitational not already mentioned in coverage were Chardon’s Ben Baierl (100 and 200) and 4x1, Mentor’s Nick Lampert (high jump) and 4x8 and South’s Devonaire Conliffe (shot put).

• Chagrin Falls’ Mick Lawrence recorded a sprint double at Ravenna’s Valkyrie Invitational, taking 100 with an 11.48 and 200 in 23.16.

• NDCL’s Ryan Hertz won 800 at St. Thomas Aquinas’ Big Ox Invitational with a 2:03.20, edging the hosts’ Edward Walsh (2:03.38), who ran a leg on their DIII state champion 4x8 last spring. The Lions also took 4x8 with an 8:26.63.

• Euclid’s Adam White took 300 hurdles at Canton GlenOak’s Eagle Elite with a 40.78, good for the area’s third-best time in the event this season. The Panthers’ Isiah Claytor tied Lampert for the area’s top high jump this spring, taking second at GlenOak by clearing 6-4 on his first attempt.

• Area top threes at the Walsh Jesuit Warrior Relays were turned in by Benedictine’s Matthew Dinovo (first, 300 hurdles and third, 110 hurdles) and University’s long jump relay (first) and distance medley (third).

• Brush’s Quentin Woodall was fifth in 110 hurdles and VASJ’s Nate Dean was sixth in 400 at the Mansfield Mehock Relays.

At the line

• In addition to the team standings situation, the conclusion to the A boys pole vault relay at Perry was also unique. The event ran unusually late until 4:15 p.m. with three competitors left — Mayfield’s Bobby Casey and Maurice Monroe and Geneva’s Kody Brown. But after 4x4 was contested, event workers at pole vault left. In turn, athletes from other schools, including Mayfield sprinter and Central Michigan football recruit Julian Hicks, were enlisted to help administer the event, getting on-the-fly training on how to set up a pole vault standard.

• Area coaches are reminded when they submit tris and quads that are classified as double duals, The News-Herald will publish all team scores but the top two overall in each event only so as to avoid repetitive results.
