Chicago picks Trubisky; Browns take Garrett with No. 1 pick
Mitch Trubisky is not coming to the Cleveland to play for the Browns.
But three other first-round draft picks are.
In an evening that included a pair of trades, the Browns added defensive end Myles Garrett, safety Jabrill Peppers and tight end David Njoku to the roster on the opening evening of the draft on April 27.
The draft resumes on April 28, with the Browns drafting next at pick No. 52.
With the first pick of the 2017 draft, the Browns took Texas A&M defensive end Myles Garrett, widely regarded as the top player in the draft regardless of position.
Garrett should immediately infuse a shot of iron to an otherwise anemic pass rush that saw the Browns accumulate only 26 sacks in 16 games in a 2016 season in which the Browns finished 1-15.
Some thought the Browns might be in a position to also get Trubisky, but that scenario evaporated when the Mentor and North Carolina quarterback went No. 2 to the
Chicago Bears.
The Browns had an opportunity to take Clemson’s Deshaun Watson at No. 12, but instead traded back to No. 25 with the Houston Texans.
Houston picked Watson, and in turn the Browns selected Peppers — the versatile player from Michigan — at 25.
Peppers said he is expecting to play defensive back and return kicks for the Browns after playing linebacker at Michigan.
The Browns picked up Houston’s first-round draft pick in 2018 in the trade to move down to 25.
Then to cap the night, the Browns traded their No. 33 pick and No. 108 pick to get back into the first round to take athletic tight end David Njoku from Miami, Fla.
