Browns have five picks in first two rounds in 2018

Wait ‘til next year has taken on a new meaning for the Browns.

The Browns, owners of the 12th pick when the draft began on April 27, traded it to the Houston Texans for 25th pick in 2017 and the Texans first-round pick in 2018.

The Browns now have two first-round picks and three second-round picks next year.

The first-round picks are their own and the one just acquired from Houston. The second-round picks are their own, one acquired from Philadelphia last year in the trade that allowed the Eagles to draft Carson Wentz and one from Houston in the trade that allowed the Texans to unload Brock Osweiler and his $16 million contract on the Browns. The Browns gave up a fourthround pick in that trade.

Houston moved up 13 picks to draft quarterback Deshaun Watson from Clemson.

Earlier this week, Watson said it would be a “slap in the face” if the Browns drafted Mitchell Trubisky ahead of him. The Browns did not get the chance to take Trubisky because the Bears took the Mentor High and North Carolina quarterback with the second pick after a trade with the 49ers.

If Watson thought the Browns preferring Trubisky was a slap in the face, he might consider the Browns bailing out of the 12th pick so another team could take him a punch from Stipe Miocic.

Watson can get his revenge Oct. 15 when the Browns play the Texans in Houston.

Jim Brown calling

Sashi Brown did not make the call to Myles Garrett to inform the defensive end the Browns made him the first pick in the draft. Instead, Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown made the call.

It did not go smoothly, though. Garrett lost his cell phone and the Browns had to call Garrett’s mother.

Garrett was not in Philadelphia for the draft. He watched in from his hometown in Texas with family and friends.
