James honored for community activism

The Profession­al Basketball Writers Associatio­n recognized LeBron James’ community activism by naming thim the winner of the 2016-17 J. Walter Kennedy Citizenshi­p Award winner.

LeBron James believes in giving back.

From the earliest days of an NBA career that began 14 ears ago, the four-time NBA Most Valuable Player has given freely of his time, energy and money to causes in which he believes.

He’s been especially active in his hometown of Akron, using the LeBron James Family Foundation to oversee programs geared to keeping at-risk kids in school.

On May 21, the Profession­al Basketball Writers Associatio­n recognized James’ community activism by naming the 32-yearold James the winner of the 2016-17 J. Walter Kennedy Citizenshi­p Award winner.

“James’ efforts to help young people are exemplary,” PBWA President Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel wrote in a prepared statement. “He is making a difference, and so are the other 25 people who were nominated for this award.”

Other finalists included New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony, Chicago Bulls forward Jimmy Butler, Portland Trail Blazers guard C.J. McCollum and Memphis Grizzlies forward Zach Randolph.

James was asked for comment on winning the award after the Cavaliers finished their shoot-around on May 21 at Cleveland Clinic Courts in Independen­ce. The practice preceded Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals at Quicken Loans Arena.

“It means a lot,” James said.“I do so much for my community and my foundation does a great job of giving families and kids and the youth an opportunit­y to better their lives and better their future.”

An estimated 1,100 students are now in the program, which James dubbed I PROMISE. He forged an alliance with the University of Akron to provide assistance for those students and put them on track to receive four-year degrees.

James participat­es by staying in touch with many of the students. The foundation identifies students and their families who need help everyday expenses. Every year, James is the guest of honor at an outing for the students and families held at Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky.

Community activism is always a high priority for James.

“It’s always been if I became successful, whatever I do in life, I want to give back to my community,” he said.
