Madison standoff ends peacefully

- — Staff reports

A May 17 incident in Madison Township, eerily similar to a situation which played out there in

March, concluded with a suicidal man being taken to a hospital in Concord Township, the Madison Township Police Department reports.

Township police officers responded to a home in the 6900 block of Roe Boulevard after a women who lives there called dispatch to report her 27-year-old husband was acting erratically. She said he was highly intoxicated and, bearing a kitchen knife, was suicidal.

“Upon arrival, officers found (the subject) in the state described, pacing within the house holding a kitchen knife to his throat,” a Madison Township Police report shows.

The report goes on to state that the suicidal man’s wife and father were subsequently evacuated from the house but “small children were still isolated within the house, in their bedrooms...”

During negotiations, police learned the suicidal man was upset over “marital matters and wanted to kill himself,” the police statement reflects.

“Initially, (the subject) refused to put down the knife and threatened to commit ‘suicide by cop’ if necessary,” the department’s missive reads.

The law enforcement officers on scene eventually convinced the man to drop the knife and, after a brief struggle, took him into custody and transported him to TriPoint Medical Center for a mental evaluation, police confirm.

No criminal charges were filed.
