Nina, Pinta to visit in August
Ships are replicas of those Columbus used
A pair of historic tall ships will visit Lorain this summer.
The Nina and the Pinta, reproductions of two of the three ships that carried explorer Christopher Columbus across the Atlantic Ocean, will make Lorain their port Aug. 4 through 7.
The visit was announced June 13 as part of the board meeting of the Lorain Port Authority.
The vessels are operated by The Columbus Foundation as floating museums that educate the public about the “caravel,” the type of Portuguese ship used by Columbus and other explorers to sail the world, according to the Foundation website.
The Nina is regarded as the “most historically accurate Columbus replica ship ever built,” according to the Foundation. The 75-ton vessel has a deck length of 65 feet, an 18-foot beam and seven-foot draft.
The Pinta was built in Brazil to accompany the Nina.
It is a larger version of the
caravel and was built to accommodate walk-aboard tours, along with private parties and charters, according to the Foundation.
The Pinta has a deck length of 85 feet and a beam of 23 feet.
It drafts about 7.5 feet of water.
The vessels visited Lorain in 2014 and 2010. The Columbus Foundation includes a photograph of the ships passing the Lorain Lighthouse in its official gallery of pictures
of the Nina and Pinta.
In 2015, they were featured in the docu-drama “Four Blood Moons,” which studies historical, scientific and religious “signs” from God.
The ships will be open for tours while in Lorain. The city is one of two Ohio stops scheduled this summer for the vessels.
The ships will dock in Ashtabula from July 28 to Aug. 1, according to their official schedule.
