Euclid’s Bush to Cincy, Coreno hired at South

Euclid gridiron standout Arquon Bush has verbally committed to play in college at Cincinnati, and South has hired Mike Coreno as its new head girls basketball coach, writes John Kampf.

Arquon Bush is a Cincinnati Bearcat.

The 6-foot, 165-pound defensive back/kick returner from Euclid announced June 19 he will sign a national letter of intent to play college football for Cincinnati.

The senior-to-be will sign in early November.

Bush chose Cincinnati over offers from Michigan State, Purdue, Rutgers, Kent State, Ohio, Ball State, Central Michigan, Eastern Kentucky and Albany.

“I’m excited,” Bush said of his commitment. “Now I can focus on the rest of my high school career.”

Bush is coming off a junior campaign in which he had 52 tackles with five interceptions and 13 passes defended.

He saw spot duty on offense, with 15 catches for 216 yards.

Bush was the area’s premier return man in 2016, averaging 22 yards per punt return and scoring five times.

“I think I can go in and contribute right away,” Bush said. “The coaches (at Cincinnati) said they are bringing me in as a cornerback and punt returner, but maybe I can do a little bit on offense, too.”

Bush said he visited the Cincinnati campus May 26, and at that point he “had a pretty good idea” that’s where he wanted to commit.

He made the call June 19 to position coach Willie Martinez, who passed the phone on to first-year head coach Luke Fickell to give the good news Bush was a Bearcat.

“That was the last place I visited,” Bush said. “It was down to Michigan State and Cincinnati. I just liked the feeling there — everything about it.

“They were very happy when they got my call.”

Bush said he plans on majoring in sports medicine.

“Week 1 vs. Glenville,” Bush said of the first game of his senior year with Euclid. “That’s all that’s on my mind now.”
