South hires Coreno

Mike Coreno has been named the new girls basketball coach at South.

Coreno succeeds Erin Ertter as the Rebels’ coach after Ertter was not renewed following last season.

Coreno is coming off a successful stint at Hathaway Brown, where he led the Blazers to back-to-back state final four appearances. Hathaway Brown lost to Kettering Alter, 5841, in the Division II state final in March.

“I think we are the luckiest people alive right now,” said South athletic director Jim Mormino of the hiring, which was approved by the board of education last week. “After meeting with him, seeing his résumé and then talking to past athletic directors and people he has worked with, Mike was the best candidate. He has an impeccable coaching resume.”

Coreno is not a teacher, but works in the sewer and plumbing business. He is taking over a South program that went 2-20 last year.

Coreno has coaching experience at Kenston, Beachwood, Shaker Heights and Chanel prior to Hathaway Brown.

“I took over Kenston after a 1-19 season,” he said. “I am not unfamiliar with program building. My expectations are always to win and have a program compete for district titles and conference titles. The ultimate goal, and I say this because it is the ultimate goal of every program, is to win a state championship.”

That drive is part of what made Coreno a prime candidate at South.

“I think he is (a program builder),” Mormino said. “He has had success wherever he’s been. Hopefully we can get things turned around, build a program and get back to the winning ways in competing for conference and district titles.”

Coreno, who also coaches softball at Beachwood, said he met his new players recently and is excited about getting to work. The project, he said, will begin with working on fundamentals and building the program.

“I want the kids to be excited about a new direction,” Coreno said. “It’s a new opportunity for them, and it’s a new opportunity for me.”
