Penitentiary Glen Reservation in Kirtland hosting two-day camping event
Camping enthusiasts can soon head to Penitentiary Glen Reservation in Kirtland for the Great American Backyard Campout.
“We’re offering a host of things campers can enjoy,” said Caitlin Ambrose, interpretive manager of Penitentiary Glen Reservation’s Nature Center, adding that the event is in its ninth year. “Essentially, we want families to come out and experience nature. We offer things that are truly unique.
“This two-day, allweather event will feature gorge and night hikes, and a fun variety of nature-themed programs. And we’re expecting nice weather. Our appeal is to families, but we welcome all outdoor and nature enthusiasts. We’ll have a naturalist here, too.”
Interpretive Naturalist Trevor Wearstler said novice campers shouldn’t be deterred, either.
“The Great American Backyard Campout is a great opportunity to give camping a try. Whether it’s your first camping experience or you are a seasoned camper, it’s an enjoyable time for all.
“Lake Metroparks is participating alongside the National Wildlife Federation’s summer-long celebration of camping as a way to connect with nature and wildlife,” he said. “Here at Penitentiary Glen, there are many activities planned throughout the event that everyone is invited to join.”
