PLASTIC SURGERY
Paul Vanek, MD, FACS
Q: Do you use Liposuction for a Gynecomastia? A: I perform Gynecomastia treatments with VASER Liposelection, a minimally invasive procedure that can achieve a beautiful body stature that men may have dreamed about before they developed the abnormal proliferation of their breast tissue. This is less invasive than standard liposelection as it utilizes VASER technology. VASER is an acronym for Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance, which basically means ultrasound. Liposelection is the terminology we use because the ultrasound focuses its energy on the tissue we wish to treat – the adipocyte, or fat cell. The procedure allows differentiation between fat and important tissues such as blood vessels, connective tissues, nerves and lymphatics. VASER Liposelection selectively eradicates the breast and fatty tissue, and allows your body to shrink wrap its tissues around the newly formed breast, namely the pectoralis major muscle. Because the ultrasound is more highly selective in targeting and liquefying the fat, it minimizes risks of injury to the blood vessels and nerves. This selectivity means less tearing and injury to surrounding tissue, resulting in less bleeding, bruising and pain. After the fat is reduced in the chest region by ultrasonic emulsification of the fat cell, the emulsified fat is removed through a gentle suction process. VASER Liposelection is not a major surgery, so it can be performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. As much as I believe that VASER Liposelection is the best technique, the most important element in your success is the expertise and experience of the surgeon, so I urge you to choose your plastic surgeon carefully.
