Area residents nominated for essays

The New Connecticut Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution has announced its 2017 winner of the DAR Good Citizen Scholarship Essay.

At the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year, high schools in the Lake and Geauga county area were asked to nominate a student who exemplified the characteristics of a good citizen. The qualities we emphasize are: Dependability, Service, Leadership and Patriotism. The nominees were:

• Florence Piotrkowski, Chardon

• Tessa Osborne, Lake Catholic

• Alexander Gonia, Mentor

• Bella Garcia, West Geauga

• Rhiannon Johnson, Wickliffe

• Lydia Abrams, Willoughby South

These outstanding students were then asked to write an essay, without the use of research material, on “Our American Heritage and our Responsibility for Preserving It.” The focus question was “How do the combined actions of many good citizens keep our nation moving forward?”

The 2017 winner is Florence Piotrowski from Chardon, and she was presented a $500 scholarship from Kim Mason-Wylie of the New Connecticut Chapter. Each of the other students have been awarded a commemorative pin and a certificate of achievement.

Funeral Homes awards scholarships

Five Star Education Scholarship Awarded to Local Students

DeJohn Funeral Homes & Crematory has awarded five local students with its Ross Sr. & Carmella DeJohn Five Star Education Scholarship. Each student will receive $500 for college tuition or books.

Scholarships were awarded to Stephen Blauch of Chardon High School (attending Ohio State University, Engineering); Garrett Scolos of Kenston High School (attending University of Virginia, Public Health/Pre Med); Marilyn Moyer of Mentor High School (attending University of Findlay, Animal Sciences/ Pre Vet Medicine); Courtney Favazzo of Mayfield High School (attending Ohio Northern University, Pharmacy); and Erin Ward of Lake Catholic High School (Westminister College, Biology).

These students have demonstrated the “Five Star” ideals of integrity, fairness, excellence, independence and professionalism. These qualities will help continue their development growth on their journeys to becoming adults and valued members of our community.

In 1993 the DeJohn family, in conjunction with the family owned funeral home, established the scholarship in honor of Ross (Sr) and Carmella’s dedication to education. Ross Sr. served as Mayor of Mayfield Heights for over 28 years and during that time was very supportive of all school related issues including support for many school levies. More than $35,000 in scholarships has been awarded to deserving high school seniors living in Cuyahoga, Lake and Geauga counties.

Students may apply for the DeJohn Five Star Education Scholarship in early spring and the application may be downloaded from the DeJohn website. For more information on the student scholarship, visit www.dejohncares.com.
