Library patrons can soon access 3D printer
People will soon be able to craft jewelry, toys, cell phone cases, widgets and more using a 3D printer at Mentor Public Library’s Main Branch.
Starting, Sept. 5, patrons will be able to use the printer to turn computer files — specifically stereolithograpy (STL) files — into three-dimensional objects.
“Our goal is to make this amazing technology available to our community,” said MPL Executive Director Cheryl Kuonen. in a press release.” You can use it to fabricate fun toys like rubberband cars and T-Rex skulls or replacement parts for your skateboards. But it’s also a tool to stretch your creativity. See what you can make. Its only limit is your creativity.”
The library noted that all adult patrons with a library card in good standing can submit files to be printed, though there are some requirements:
• The library will charge $1 for each hour it takes an item to print, rounding up to the nearest quarter of an hour. Librarians will estimate the project’s cost when patrons provide the file for printing, but exact price will be established when printing is finished.
• The library will provide the filament that the printer will use. Available colors include red, white, blue, and black.
• Patrons must submit a signed 3D Printing User Agreement before librarians will print their projects.
• Once printed, patrons will have seven days to pick up and pay for their project.
