The Browns, young and deep at defensive tackle, cut veteran Desmond Bryant on Aug. 22.

In other news, the Browns announced middle linebacker Tank Carder suffered a torn ACL in the Aug. 21 game with the Giants. He will require surgery and miss the 2017 season. Joe Schobert, a second-year player, is now the starting middle linebacker.

Bryant missed last season with a torn pectoral muscle injured while training on his own in early July. He is healthy again and began training camp as a starter, but the Browns decided to go in a younger direction. Trevon Coley, the surprise of training camp, started alongside Jamie Meder at defensive tackle against the Giants on Aug. 21.

The Browns drafted Larry Ogunjobi and Caleb Brantley to play defensive tackle. Danny Shelton is in his third year. Meder is in his third full season with the Browns.

“We’d like to thank Des for all his contributions to the Cleveland Browns in his time with our organization,” said Browns Executive Vice President of Football Operations Sashi Brown. “He proved to be a leader and tone setter along our defensive front and we wish him well.”

Bryant signed with the Browns as a free agent in 2013 and played in 41 games in three years. He made 127 tackles.

The Browns filled the vacant roster spot by signing defensive lineman Brandon Thompson, a 305-pound 2012 third-round draft choice by the Bengals.

He has 53 career tackles and three sacks in 39 games.
