City to hold retro movie night at former Walmart
Eastlake is planning to host a retro movie night in conjunction with Walmart.
The idea, according to Eastlake Councilman Michael Zuren, came from an Economic Community Development Committee meeting where they discussed ways to combine community outreach with a celebration of Eastlake’s history. During that discussion the drive-in theater was brought up.
The Eastlake Drive-in, now demolished, was located at 34280 Vine St. It had one screen and could accommodate 500 cars, according to the website cinematreasures.org.
Comments on the webpage indicate the theater closed in November 1986 and was replaced by Walmart, which is now empty, due to a newer one being built, and Vineyards Plaza.
ECDC members decided to reach out to Walmart regarding the use of the facility for the movie night, and according to Zuren, Walmart agreed to cohost the event.
“Both the city and Walmart want the event to be as similar to the old drive-in theater experience as possible,” Zuren said.
On Sept. 3, there will be a double feature, “Smurf’s — The Lost Village” and “Grease,” will be shown at the original location of the theater.
Typical movie foods and drinks will be available to purchase with the proceeds from the sales going to a Walmart charity.
The movie will be shown directly on the building, and there will be a place up front for seating for those that bring chairs. There will also be a costume contest 20 minutes before the start of each movie.
The free even starts at approximately 8:30 p.m.
Additional information can be found on Facebook at Eastlake Movie Night.
“The City of Eastlake is seeking avenues to create a better environment for our businesses and residents,” Zuren said.
“We believe collaboration between government, business, and residents will create a stronger, healthier, and thriving community.”
