- By John Kampf jkampf@news-herald.com @nhpreps on Twitter

What: Nonconference game

When: Aug. 25, 7 p.m. Where: 15210 St. Clair, Cleveland

Last year: Euclid won, 13-7 Records: Euclid 7-4 in 2016, Glenville 7-4 in 2016

For the record: The Panthers won this game last year, and it helped catapult them to the Division I playoffs. There are a lot of new faces on the team this year, but there’s plenty of talent, including University of Cincinnati recruit Arquon Bush, who will play both ways and also on special teams. QB Cee Jay Hale takes over for all-Ohioan Noah Mitchell . ... Glenville also made the playoffs last year under longtime coach Ted Ginn Sr. They were 7-0 in the Senate games and 0-4 out of them, so needless to say, this is a big game. Backs BJ West and Tre-Ron Fullerton are back this year, as is QB Xander Spikes.

GENEVA AT MADISON

What: Nonconference game

When: Aug. 25, 7 p.m. Where: SPIRE Last year: Geneva won, 16-15

Records: Madison 5-5 in 2016, Geneva 2-8 in 2016 For the record: When the Eagles upended the Blue Streaks in Week 1 last year, it’s safe to say no one saw that coming. Can Geneva pull off the upset two years in a row? ... Madison boasts a big and physical offensive line, paving the way for a fine stable of backs that include Kenny Cline and Dom Conforte. Sophomore QB Alex Dragas has a huge upside, but a good running game would take the pressure off him in his first varsity start . ... Geneva is a little inexperienced, and is counting on some sophomores to come through for them this year. Players like Kyle Stark, Kyle Hawk and Blake Peet will be looked at to step up and lead this young team.

KIRTLAND AT CHAGRIN FALLS

What: Nonconference game

When: Aug. 25, 7 p.m. Where: C.S. Harris Stadium Last year: Kirtland won, 31-7

Records: Kirtland 11-2 in 2016, Chagrin Falls 4-6 in 2016

For the record: Kirtland won in a landslide last year, but word is Chagrin is much more formidable this year . ... The Hornets are huge on the front line, which bodes will for their vaunted running game that includes returning 1,500-yard rusher Joey Torok, 240-pound Brett Diemer and speedy Dylan Aquilla . ... Chagrin returns seven starters on offense and seven on defense. QB Christoph Sontich (6-foot5) and backs Pat Holland and Mick Lawrence have experience. It’ll come down to defense for Chagrin.

MENTOR AT MASSILLON

What: Nonconference game

When: Aug. 25, 7:30 p.m. Where: Paul Brown Tiger Stadium, 1 Paul E. Brown Dr. SE, Massillon Last year: Mentor won, 57-31

Records: Mentor 6-4 in 2016, Massillon 8-3 in 2016

For the record: There should be a full house in Massillon for this one. Mentor cruised to victory last year by 26 points, but came up short in their quest for a playoff berth. Eight starters are back on offense, including QB Tadas Tatarunas, who has thrown for more than 5,000 yards in two years at the helm. The offensive line is big and experienced, which should open some running lanes for RB Chris Edmond . ... Massillon’s back eight on defense is a strength. Linebacker Jamir Thomas is a difference-maker. The Tiger’s offensive line, which lost Thayer Munford to Ohio State, might need time to jell.

RIVERSIDE AT PERRY

What: Nonconference game

When: Aug. 25, 7 p.m. Where: Alumni Stadium Last year: Perry won,

42-34

Records: Perry 13-1 in 2016, Riverside 4-6 in 2016

For the record: The Pirates were 13-0 when they finally tasted defeat in the Division IV state semifinals. But few remember a 42-34 slugfest in Week 1 against the Beavers, a game that was closer than many expected it to be . ... Perry returns all but seven players from a year ago, and added speedy WR Josh Martin and freshman RB Jaylen Anderson to the mix. The offensive potential with this group is off the charts . ... Riverside returns its entire defensive line, but the team’s best defense this week might be its offense.

WEST GEAUGA AT CHARDON

What: Nonconference game

When: Aug. 25, 7 p.m. Where: Memorial Stadium Last year: Chardon won, 28-0

Records: Chardon 11-1 in 2016, West Geauga 6-4 in 2016

For the record: There’s a lot new about this rivalry. Chardon had to replace most of its starters from an 11-1 team last year, while West G had to replace its coach (Lou Cirino left for Strongsville) and its top offensive weapon (RB Joe Daddario) . ... The Hilltoppers are stil loaded, with a big (but green) offensive line and an offensive skill set that includes speedy Jon McKnight and Mason Ziegenfuss running the ball. Linebackers Dylan Hemly and Michigan State recruit Chase Kline headline the defense . ... West Geauga returns nine starters on offense and nine on defense, so first-year coach Brian Craemer inherited a nice, experienced team. If the Wolverines want to win, slowing down that Chardon running game is a must.

NDCL AT SOUTH

What: Nonconference game

When: Aug. 25, 7 p.m. Where: Harry E. Winters Stadium

Last year: South won,

33-19

Records: South 5-5 in 2016, NDCL 9-4 in 2016

On the airwaves: WINTAM 1330, FM 101.5

For the record: The Rebels won this matchup a year ago, but it was the Lions who advanced to the third round of the Division IV playoffs . ... The visiting Lions return Charles Forbes at quarterback and standout Aidan MacDonald on the line. Defensively, two of the area’s best are linebacker Manni Malone and defensive back Josh Peroni . ... South is opening its new turf field at Harry E. Winters Stadium, so there will be a lot of emotion. QB Steven D’Eusanio and RB Tyler Henderson are the new headline performers on offense.
