Matchworks adds tenant

Salon and wellness spa latest addition to building

Vipassana Salon and Wellness Spa is the latest business to take occupancy in Matchworks, a historic building in Mentor undergoing revitalization since purchased by Marc Wertenberger in 2015.

Lydia Swaney, of Willoughby, who owns Vipassana, was drawn to the locale at 8500 Station St. in part because of its strong aesthetics, including red brick, exposed beams and a prominent water feature.

“The building is so beautiful,” she said. “It has such a calming energy… a great vibe.”

Swaney, who worked for several years at Phases Hair Salon in Willoughby, said Mentor was the perfect place to branch out after deciding she wanted to open her own shop.

“It’s still close to Willoughby. I wanted it to be convenient for my clients,” she said.

After leasing the 1,650-square-foot, previously office space three months ago, Swaney delved into designing it with the help of Wertenberger and an architect. All but one of the walls have been removed creating an open space as well as allowing light to enter from its many windows.

“The entire layout of the salon, every step of the way, is based on flow and comfort,” she said. “I know what matters is the customers in the chairs. Everything is based on their comfort. Everyone who walks through the door is our guest. It’s an experience when you come here.”

Upon entering, visitors view a large circular window which shares a wall and visually connects Vipassana’s neighboring art jewelry business owned by Brandon Holschuh.

The reception and retail space offering Aveda products flows into the hair care area which then moves to a nail area and spa treatment room.

Swaney chose Vipassana as the moniker of her salon based on the name of an ancient meditative practice which focuses on the present moment and is used as a tool for mental, emotional, physical and spiritual wellness.

The new proprietor was pleased to become part of the camaraderie shared by many of the building’s business owners who work together in offering various community events.

“I think it’s important to get the whole building involved,” she said.

She recently styled hair for models who took part in a fashion show. The event raised more than $600 to benefit the Lake County Board of Developmental Disabilities/Deepwood.

Next, Swaney is looking forward to joining in a Health and Wellness show set for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sept. 9.

The happening is set to focus on a holistic approach to health and wellness and will present information on nutrition, homeopathic healing, holistic healing, life coaching and art therapy, as well as offering products and other services.

Admittance is free and while there guests are welcome to peruse other Matchworks establishments, including Stella’s Art Gallery.

The building’s current occupancy stands at about 80 percent. Wertenberger says its success is a direct result of marketing to “alternative” types of businesses such as artists, jewelers and others while maintaining its existing professional tenants.

He claims that the spring opening of a new restaurant, Fourk, “tied it all together.”

“Fourk is doing well as we are now offering private dining for groups up to 120 guests,” he said. Accommodations for smaller groups, a Happy Hour and live music on Thursdays and Fridays have also drawn business to the eatery.
