Trubisky to open season as Bears’ No. 2 QB

-

No. 2 overall draft pick Mitchell Trubisky will open the season as the Chicago Bears’ No. 2 quarterback.

Coach John Fox said Trubisky will back up Mike Glennon when the Bears host the defending NFC champion Atlanta Falcons Sept. 10.

The Bears had said they would treat this as sort of a redshirt season with Trubisky behind Glennon and veteran Mark Sanchez. But after starting 13 games at North Carolina and working primarily out of the shotgun, the rookie has come along quicker than anticipated.

Fox says “everybody was pretty impressed” with how he is adjusting to the pro game. Trubisky dazzled at times in the preseason and sparked a debate in Chicago over who should start.

SEAHAWKS’ BENNETT ACCUSES LAS VEGAS POLICE OF EXCESSIVE FORCE » Seattle’s Michael Bennett is accusing Las Vegas police of racially motivated excessive force after he says he was threatened at gunpoint following a report that shots were heard at a casino hotel.

Bennett posted a Twitter account early Wednesday saying police singled him out as he was running from a sharp sound following the Aug. 26 fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor.

Police Officer Jacinto Rivera says Las Vegas police are checking for video and written reports but can’t immediately verify Bennett’s account.

The 6-foot-4 defensive end says he was handcuffed face-down on the ground after one officer held a gun to his head saying he would blow his head off if he moved.

Bennett, who has been a leader of the national anthem protests started by former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, was released without charges.

Police later attributed the report of gunfire to the sound of velvet rope stands falling over. HURRICANE IRMA FORCES WEEK 1 BYE » The Miami Dolphins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers will open the season with a hurricane-imposed bye.

Their opener scheduled for Sept. 10 was postponed by the NFL until Nov. 19 because of Hurricane Irma.

Irma is forecast to threaten much of Florida beginning this weekend.

Still, the scheduling situation prompted extensive discussions and speculation before the decision. Both teams resisted switching to Nov. 19 because it means playing the entire season without a break.

The Dolphins went without a bye in 1992, which they gave up when their scheduled opener was postponed because of Hurricane Andrew. That’s the last Miami team to reach the AFC championship game.

The 2017 Dolphins will now open Sept. 17 at the Los Angeles Chargers, and their first home game won’t be until Oct. 8 against the Tennessee Titans. Their game at London on Oct. 1 against New Orleans is designated a home game for Miami.

Tampa Bay will open Sept. 17 at home against the Chicago Bears.

HURRICANE IRMA FORCES SCHEDULE CHANGES» Travel concerns prompted officials to move the start of Saturday’s football game between No. 21 South Florida and UConn to 10:30 a.m.

The game had been scheduled for noon in East Hartford, Connecticut, well out of Hurricane Irma’s path.

The issue for USF was the potential impact the storm may have on the Tampa area, including if it would impede the Bulls getting home after the game.

UConn said Sept. 6 the decision was made to move up the start time after the schools consulted with officials from the American Athletic Conference.

The conference says halftime will be just 15 minutes and USF will depart immediately after the game, with no media availabilities at the stadium.
