Q:

Should I be concerned about scars from breast augmentation incisions?

A:

This should not be a problem if you have a board-certified plastic surgeon perform your surgery. I am always cognizant of minimizing scars in every surgery that I perform. Your breast implants are a lifetime decision, so I believe that it is best from every standpoint to place the incision in the inframammary fold, where the breast meets the chest. This is sometimes also called the inframammary crease, line or ligament. In terms of a discrete scar, a properly formulated inframammary fold scar with subcuticular (below the epidermis) closure will provide you an incredibly minimalistic scar. After I perform your surgery, I then incorporate Sciton broadband light laser into the recovery sequence. I usually laser your scar starting at one or two months postoperatively to reduce any red or brown scarring that may occur based upon your skin type. Your ethnicity does not matter. Beginning after surgery, I carefully review with all of my patients their personal scar management process, so that by a few months post-surgery, scars are nearly imperceptible. My patients will attest to this. Also, if for any reason you ever should need a re-operative intervention, the inframammary fold incision provides the best overall access for improving any outcome that may occur over the lifetime of your implants.

My website’s before and after gallery provides many great breast augmentation photos, and you will notice minimal postop scars. We can show you some specific images and discuss this further if you visit my office.
