Burton Township voters who are eligible to cast ballots in the Nov. 7 General Election will decide the fate of two tax levies.

One is a 1-mill, fiveyear, replacement fire and emergency medical services levy. If passed, it will represent an increase of $22.60 per year for the owner of $100,000 in property valuation, according to the Geauga County Auditor’s Office.

The same office reports this issue is being voted upon a year early and would not be collected until tax year 2018 (2019 being the collection year.) The existing, 1-mill levy will yield $36,264 in 2017 and costs the owner of $100,000 in property valuation $12.40 per year. If the Nov. 7 replacement levy passes, it is expected to yield $80,469 in 2019 and cost $35 annually per $100,000 in property valuation.

The other levy is an additional, 0.1-mill, continuing levy to support the township’s cemetery operations, according to the Geauga County Elections Board.

If voters approve the measure, its annual yield in 2018 is expected to be $8,047, the county Auditor’s Office reports, adding that it would represent a net tax increase of 30 cents annually per $100,000 in property valuation. It would commence in 2017 and first due in calendar year 2018.

Burton Township voters last approved a 1-mill, fiveyear, additional fire levy by a margin of 56.55 percent to 43.45 percent in the Nov. 8, 2016 General Election, Elections Board records show.

According to the county elections board, there are 1,740 registered voters in Burton Township’s three precincts.
