The lowdown

On a warm night at Chardon Memorial Field, the Hilltoppers tamed visiting Mayfield, 20-7, on Sept. 22.

The win pushed Chardon to 4-1 on the season, while Mayfield fell to 2-3.

The game started off with both teams going back and forth, although both had nothing to show for it.

It wasn’t until Mayfield punched it in on a 7-yard keeper by senior quarterback Jake Dostal that the scoring started.

However, those were the only points scored by the Wildcats. An early injury to Dostal forced freshman quarterback Michael Huss onto the field, where he received a tough welcome from the Chardon defense in his first varsity action of his high school career.

In the second half, the Hilltoppers’ defense intercepted two Mayfield passes, and they added two touchdowns of their own — both on runs by junior quarterback Andrew Kobuszewski that went for more than 60 yards each.

• For the Hilltoppers, junior quarterback Kobuszewski looked like more of a running back as the game went on, as he finished with 185 yards rushing on 23 attempts. He scored both of the Hilltoppers’ touchdowns using his legs. He added 79 yards passing.

Stat attack

Both teams combined for a total of 20 penalties, which combined to greatly affect field position.

Junior Chardon running back Jon McKnight had multiple 20-yard gains, some receiving while others came on the ground.

The Ziegenfuss brothers — senior Mason and sophomore Keaton played well. Keaton added six points on field goals while Mason added 51 total yards and pinned Mayfield deep into their own territory with his numerous punts.

They said it

CHARDON COACH MITCH HEWITT » “We’re in a great spot any time you can beat Mayfield at home. I think our line improved today. They’ve got a long ways to go before they are considered good in my opinion, but they got better. Our defense was fast. They’re pretty relentless.” MAYFIELD COACH ROSS BANDIERA » “Huss played very well. I don’t know anything about Jake’s injury, as of right now. Michael will be ready (next week) if he needs to be and Jake wil be ready if he can go.”
