Cinema 20 in Painesville Township was closed from Sept. 4 to Sept. 22 and got a makeover.

Cinema 20 in Painesville Township recently got a makeover.

David Allen, who is the manager, said the renovations to the single-screen theater at 1469 Mentor Ave. has enhanced movie-goers experience.

The theater opened in 1971 and everything was original, he said.

“We knew it was time to do something,” Allen said.

Cinema 20 was closed from Sept. 4 to Sept. 22. During that time Allen and Owner Justin Dlugokecki stripped all the carpet from the aisles and used a textured floor paint; replaced all the curtains in the showroom, installed a new high-resolution screen and improved theater seating throughout the showroom.

“We now have two sections for handicap seating,” he said.

The seats have cup holders, whereas the previous seats did not and they have movable armrests.

Due to fewer seats there is also more space in between rows, which provides increase legroom.

“We went from 324 to 198 seats,” he said. “We thought 198 would be good because our largest attended show last year was 219.”

Dlugokecki took over ownership early 2016 and set some ambitious goals that he has already accomplished.

In addition to the showroom upgrades, other improvements included renovating the lobby, refacing the concession counter, replacing the carpet, updating the bathroom and adding a Pepsi self-serve station with free beverage refills.

“We’ve done a lot, but we’re still not finished,” he said.

The bathroom renovations are set to begin soon.

Allen said they are looking to add new lights to the lobby, fresh coat of paint throughout and other aesthetic enhancements.

Because the renovations are taking place in phases, the prices have not changed, Allen said.

The theater is open five days a week and the admission price on Thursdays is $4 and $5 on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. It is closed on Mondays and Wednesdays.
