Halloween is right around the corner and while many people may have already found their perfect costume, others are still looking.

Spirit Halloween, one of the largest costume retail chain in the country, reports in a media release some of this year’s popular trends include: characters from the Netflix series “Stranger Things” and Disney’s “Hocus Pocus,” as well as what they refer to as larger than life social media trends and White House mayhem. Additionally, “Clown in the Closet” is expected to be a hot seller, along with “Wonder Woman” and “Rick and Morty.”

Girl power is anticipated to also be the big trend carried over from last year. Characters such as Wonder, Woman, Moana, Belle and JoJo Siwa are the popular female power icons for 2017, according to the release.

Trending for toddlers this year, are the popular cartoons characters of Rusty Rivets, Blaze, Shimmer and Shine genies in training, Pj Masks and Paw Patrol.

For those looking to take it back a couple of decades, flashback to the 1990’s with characters from “Baywatch,” “Saved by the Bell” and “Space Jam.”

Revisiting the Victorian

era and steam punk subculture is also a popular choice in costume for this year, according to Spirit Halloween.

Locally, the most popular selling costumes include Disney’s Descendants for little girls, and morph suits which can be used as part of multiple different costumes for

boys, according to Joane Jenkins, who works at the Spirit Halloween, 9567 Mentor Ave. in Mentor. Local adults are choosing the “It” scary clown and Hocus Pocus characters, she said.

Jenkins notes that Wonder Woman has been a favorite for the women at the Mentor location with the

movie being released.

Leah Beardslee, 16, of Concord has not decided what her costume will be yet this year, but “Where’s Waldo” is on her list of potential choices.

Brittney Weitzman was shopping for her children, Jacob, 5 and Adalynn, 8 weeks. She was hoping to find a cat costume for

Adalynn.

Chelsea Wickman of Concord, while shopping with her daughter Eva, was looking at a dinosaur costume

More traditional Halloween costumes such as vampires, clowns and zombies have been popular choices as well, Jenkins said.
