Halloween down, more holidays are on their way

- Cathee Thomas

One down and three to go. Halloween decorations are already being swapped out for Christmas lights. Now we just need the snow to hold off until we get them all strung up. And it would be OK if it didn’t rain for a few days. Oh, and I’d like the days in the 60s to return too. Who wants to wear gloves when you’re hanging lights, right?

That’s all I want. Then it can snow.

Keep an eye open. Holiday arts-and-craft shows are popping up all over, and creative opportunities are abundant. Classes and workshops can help you personalize gifts, and participating with a friend makes the event a gift in and of itself. Remember that. Spending time with the people you love has more value than spending money on them. (OK, both are good.

Don’t forget. Nov. 3 is the entry deadline for Gallery One’s sixth annual Cold Nose — Warm Art Kids’ Art Exhibit & Competition. Drop your entry off at Gallery One, 7003 Center St., Mentor. Entries will be exhibited at Gal- lery One throughout the holiday season. There will be prizes and ribbons in four age categories from 4 to 18 years.

Bring the kids with you and allow some time to for them to wander through the gallery and absorb the power of art. The images are awesome as an adult, but seeing them with a child just magnifies the impact.

Get details at www.galleryone.com or email lindadc@gallerygiclees.com or call 800-621-1141 or 440-255-1200.

Euclid Art Association

At 7 p.m. Nov. 6, the Euclid Art Association welcomes Cuban artist Augusto Bordelois as their guest presenter. The program will be at the East Shore Methodist Church, 23002 Lake Shore Blvd., Euclid. Bordelois will focus on Charcoal Portraits. Guests are always welcome; a $3 donation is suggested.

Augusto Bordelois is an internationally awardwinning artist. He graduated from the University of Havana with a major in English language and lit- erature. His interests include sculpture, ceramics, costume design for theater and cinema, classical drawing and painting.

He compares creating his paintings to a bricklayer building a wall, brick by brick, layer by layer.

“We are awfully careful with every single detail. We are professionals. We know that success will be only achieved if we use the right materials, the right position, the right tools, experience, tricks, skills and a lot of sweat and hard work,” he writes in his artist statement. “We take care of each brick. We don’t like walls falling down.”

Bordelois also teaches at the Center for Arts-Inspired Learning (previously known as Young Audiences of Northeast Ohio), The Art House and the Ohio Arts Council and is a board member of the Center for Arts-inspired Learning.

Gallery at Lakeland

The Lakeland Community College Visual Arts Faculty Exhibition opens Nov. 12 in the Gallery at Lakeland, 7700 Clocktower Drive, Kirtland. An artists’ reception will be 7 to 9 p.m. Nov. 16. The diversely talented faculty of the college will display their artworks in sculpture, jewelry, painting, photography and more.

The 11th annual Holiday Artists’ Market is set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 27 and 28.

This is a great opportunity to support local artists, purchase original art pieces in a wide range of media — jewelry, pottery, ornaments, textiles, photography, paintings and much more, and all the proceeds will benefit the annual Lakeland Visual Arts Student Exhibition.

I am looking forward to it already.
