Veterans Day events planned in Northeast Ohio

Most of the events around Northeat Ohio for Veterans day will take place on Nov. 11.

World War I fighting ceased between the Allied Nations and Germany at 11 a.m., on Nov. 11, 1918, when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilitie­s, went into effect. It is for this reason that many Veterans Day observance­s begin at the Eleventh Hour, of the Eleventh Day, of the Eleventh Month.

The following are some of the events taking place in Northeast Ohio. They will take place on Nov. 11 unless otherwise indicated.

Cuyahoga County

• The City of Euclid and The Euclid Joint Veterans Council will host a service at 11 a.m., at Euclid City Hall, 585 E. 222nd St.

Geauga County

• VFW Post 6519, 752 Water St. in Chardon, will host a dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. that will be free for veterans. For details, call 440285-3699.

• Cardinal High School in Middlefiel­d Village will host a Veterans Day Assembly at 1:15 p.m., Nov. 14, in the school gym. All veterans are invited to a free luncheon that will be at 12:15 p.m. in the high school Distance Learning Lab. Reserve a lunch spot by contacting Jill DeRamo at jill. deramo@cardinalsc­hools.org or 440-632-0261, ext. 5000 by Nov. 10.

Lake County

• VFW Post 3862 will host a ceremony at the Boulevard of 500 Flags in Eastlake at 11 a.m. The public is welcome.

• VFW 7754 will host a ceremony at 11 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park in Fairport Harbor. The public is invited.

• American Legion Post 112, 6671 Middle Ridge Road in Madison, will host a veterans dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. at the post home. For details, call the post at 440428-7893.

• The Mentor Senior Center’s Veterans Appreciati­on Pancake Breakfast is 9:30 a.m. Breakfast is free for veterans and $4 for guests. Call the Senior Center to register at 440-974-5725.

Then, the city of Mentor will commemorat­e Veterans Day with a ceremony at the Veterans Memorial, located at corner of Center Street and Civic Center Boulevard at 11 a.m. The public is invited to attend and honor those who have served in the Armed Forces. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be moved inside the Mentor Senior Center.

• American Legion Post 336 and VFW Post 2595 will hold services at 11 a.m. at Painesvill­e Veterans Park.

Painesvill­e American Legion Post 336, 60 Chester St., will then sponsor a pork dinner at the post from 4 to 7 p.m. The dinner is free to veterans and their spouses.

• The Willoughby Senior Center will host a musical program by Grant Elementary School and a luncheon for veterans at 10:30 a.m., Nov. 9, at the senior center, 38032 Brown Ave. For details call the senior center at 440-951-2832.

• Willoughby Hills VFW Post No. 4358 will host the annual ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Willoughby Hills Community Center Gazebo. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be inside the Community Center.

The speaker is Willoughby Hills resident/ Navy veteran Richard Thompson, and the emcee is former Council President Raymond C. Somich while patriotic tunes will be sung by Dante Citraro. The VFW Post will perform the honor guard salute, and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary will sponsor a luncheon at the Post Home at 29412 White Road in Willoughby Hills following the ceremony. All are welcome to attend.

• American Legion Post 678, 570 East 328th St. in Willowick will host a commemorat­ion ceremony at the post home at 11 a.m.
