Wreath laying ceremony celebrates
Service commemorates President James A. Garfield’s birthday
Despite the rainy conditions, dozens gathered for the Wreath Laying Ceremony to honor President James A. Garfield on Nov. 18.
The event which celebrated Garfield’s legacy and 186th birth anniversary, was held at the Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland.
On behalf of President Donald Trump, Brigadier General Tony L. Wright delivered the keynote address.
“As I study the life of President Garfield I am struck at how relevant and timeless are the words he spoke over 130 years ago,” he said. “Quotes like, ‘I love agitation and investigation and glory in defending unpopular truth against popular error’. There is so much from President Garfield we can learn and apply today.”
Although Garfield only held office for four months prior to being assassinated, Wright discussed his influence and impact.
“His character was forged from lessons learned growing up in modest circumstances on an Ohio farm,” he said. “James A. Garfield was a self-made man, a teacher, a congressman, a Soldier, a college president, a successful lawyer, a preacher and a compelling orator.”
Garfield was one of the first advocates for civil rights.
Wright said Garfield addressed an all-black choir performing at his home in 1880 and stated “I would rather be with you and defeated than against you and victorious”.
He said he was pleased to share a tribute to a man whose life was ended too son, but who left a legacy of hard work and the highest of ideals.
“We are really proud to hold this ceremony at Lake View,” said Katherine Goss, who is the president and CEO of the Lake View Cemetery Association.
Goss said the educational component is vital, as many youngsters sat in the audience at the ceremony.
She said The Garfield Memorial at Lake View attracts many tourists and school groups.
“We make history come alive here,” she said. “We love teaching about Garfield he was a man of integrity.”
The Cleveland Opera Theater performed during the ceremony and numerous members of the Garfield family were present.
The wreath was placed on display at the memorial.
