Make the classy holiday move and gift a class

- Cathee Thomas Gallery Glances

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are history. So … all your holiday shopping is done, right? If the answer is yes, go bake cookies. Oh, they are also finished and in the freezer? Well, good for you. Go put up some more holiday lights.

Now, for my peers that said “no,” I have some ideas for you. Overachievers are invited to read on, as well — you may take notes for your 2018 gifting.

Your artsy friends can be challenging to shop for, but don’t give up — give a class. How many times have you heard them say, “Someday I’m going to learn (blank)”? Here’s your chance to show them you’ve been listening. Give them a little jump start with the needed supplies and a gift certificate to participate in a class.

And if you are also artsy, consider a mutual gift of a shared evening with your friend painting or creating. The painting night programs are still growing in popularity and are easy to find.

You also could plan an afternoon visiting one or more of Cleveland’s outstanding museums. That could be the catalyst for a great adventure day. Pack your sketchbook for an outing to Rockefeller Park Greenhouse, Cleveland Botanical Garden, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History or Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, just to name a few. Throw in lunch or dinner, and you have a serious event planned.

The hardest part is coordinating schedules, so it is helpful to know that most museums are open late on Wednesdays.

“The Jazz Age: American Style in the 1920s” is the special exhibit at the Cleveland Museum of Art, 11150 East Blvd., through Dec. 31. This is the first major museum exhibition to focus on America’s taste in art and design during this exuberant era.

General admission to the museum is free, but special exhibits such as this one require tickets and cost $15. There are discounts for students, seniors and members’ guests (admission is free for museum members).

Don’t miss the 46th annual Juried Art Exhibit at Valley Art Center, 155 Bell St., Chagrin Falls. The exhibit ends Dec, 13. VAC also has a gift shop to help you support local artists.
