McKenrick named All-American
The honors keep pouring in for Mason McKenrick.
This one might be the most special because McKenrick can now call himself a two-time All American.
The John Carroll senior linebacker and Mentor graduate was named second-team Division III All-America by the American Football Coaches Association, it was announced Dec. 12.
McKenrick was a first-team All-America pick in 2016 by D3football.com.
“I’m honored to be selected to a list with such talent on it,” said McKenrick. “It was a goal I set out for myself two years back. I told myself if I accomplish my personal goals it will benefit how our teams perform and the success of our team.”
Since the Blue Streaks finished off their 6-4 season with 31-27 loss to Mount Union, McKenrick received the Gene Slaughter Award for the second consecutive season, an honor given to the Ohio Athletic Conference’s top linebacker.
He was also named firstteam All-OAC for the second straight season, and a firstteam All-North Region selection by D3football.com.
McKenrick’s final season at JCU included 67 tackles and 30 solo stops with eight tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. He also had two interceptions, one returned for a touchdown, and recovered a fumble. For his college career, McKenrick made 232 tackles.
This marks the fourth straight season a Blue Streaks player made the AFCA D-III All-America team. In 2014, Aramis Greenwood (Fairport) was a first-team pick at wide receiver.
The next season, Marshall Howell (Benedictine) was a first-team all-purpose selection, followed by Jovon Dawson, another Benedictine grad who a first-team pick at defensive back.
