The Geauga Humane Society’s Rescue Village Shelter in Russell Township is again planning its Winter Animal Camp for children.

The two-day winter camp is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Dec. 28 and 29, a news release from Rescue Village confirms.

“During the ‘Season of Giving,’ campers will learn about adaptations in animals during the winter months and what they can do to help,” the release reads. “Campers will also engage in hands-on activities such as: making and baking animal treats, building bird feeders, making shelter toys and blankets, socializing with animals and teaching others how to be kind.”

The shelter has held the event for the last five years, organizers said.

Hope Burstein, executive director of Rescue Village, said the holiday season is the perfect time to help the happiness and good cheer associated with this time of year transcend seasonal observances and into the humane care and consideration of pets and other animals.

“What’s wonderful about the holidays is having the chance to make people and all creatures, great and small, happy,” she said. “This special opportunity at Rescue Village mixes children with animals and ties it up with a bright ribbon of compassion.”

Leah Backo, marketing and public relations coordinator for the shelter, added that the experience would make a great present for any animal-loving child.

“This animal camp would make a terrific holiday gift for the animal loving children in your life,” she said. “It’s a fun and educational experience that children come back for year after year.”

The camp is for children ages 9 to 11 and is $100 per participant. Organizers confirm registration is limited and fills up quickly, so early registration is recommended.

Camp applications are available on the Rescue Village website, by e-mailing Nicole Latosky at education@ geaugahumane.org, over the phone at 440-338-4819, ext. 20, or in person at Rescue Village: 15463 Chillicothe Road in Russell Township.
