Volunteers sought to deliver Dec. 25 meals

The Geauga County Department on Aging is seeking volunteers to deliver meals on Dec. 25 to senior citizens who are alone for the holidays and would love to have help to make this Christmas a little brighter.

Volunteers pick up the holiday meal (one per route) at the Chardon Senior Center, 12555 Ravenwood Drive, drive it to the senior’s home and spend some time visiting.

To volunteer, call the Department on Aging at 440279-2130.

Geauga park has snowshoe borrowing

Geauga Park District announced it will once again have its free snowshoe borrowing program at The West Woods, 9465 Kinsman Road in Russell Township.

Call-ahead reservatio­ns are preferred at 440-2869516. Borrowing can take place any time between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and last up to two hours. Any un-reserved snowshoes are available on a first-come, first served basis.

Borrowers must be 18 or older to check out a pair; anyone younger must be accompanie­d by an adult, and no one under 40 pounds may use the snowshoes due to their weight. Registrant­s must sign a waiver form and leave a driver’s license as a security deposit.

Snowshoes may not leave The West Woods except for registered programs.

Volunteers needed for tax assistance

United Way Service of Geauga County is working with AARP Tax-Aide to recruit volunteers to assist in tax assistance and preparatio­n.

Anyone over the age of 18 is welcome and does not need to be an AARP member or retiree to volunteer, according to a news release.

Volunteers will receive free tax training Jan. 8-12 at Geauga West Public Library, 13455 Chillicoth­e Road in Chester Township, and will be reimbursed on a limited basis for qualified program related expenses. Volunteer tax preparers help customers one on one at tax sites located at Geauga County libraries.

Romona Robinson speaking at library

Local, longtime newscaster Romona Robinson will discuss her Emmy Award-winning career in broadcast and read from her new book, “A Dirt Road to Somewhere,” at 6:30 p.m., Jan. 9, when she comes to Mentor Public Library’s Main Branch — 8215 Mentor Ave. in Mentor.

Robinson became the first African-American woman to anchor a newscast in Cleveland in 1987, and she has remained a fixture of the city’s broadcast news scene ever since, according to a news release. She has won eight Emmy Awards and is a member of the Ohio Broadcaste­rs Halls of Fame.

Robinson will talk about her accolade-studded career during her appearance at the library. Afterward, copies of her book will be available for sale and signing.
