Area residents join Diversity on Campus
The following students are members of Diversity on Campus at Ashland University.
• Aleya Hooker of Mayfield, is a member of Ashland University’s Diversity on Campus. Hooker is a 2016 graduate of Brush High School.
• Kaylaun Miller of Euclid, is a member of Ashland University’s Diversity on Campus. Miller is a 2017 graduate of Shaw High School.
• Nakayla Cruz of Painesville, is a member of Ashland University’s Diversity on Campus. Cruz is majoring in accounting. Cruz is a 2017 graduate of Harvey High School.
• Samantha Birks of Richmond Heights, is a member of Ashland University’s Diversity on Campus. Birks is majoring in athletic training. Birks is a 2017 graduate of Richmond Heights High School.
• Serena Hollis of Euclid, is a member of Ashland University’s Diversity on Campus. Hollis is majoring in biology and life science. Hollis is a 2017 graduate of Euclid Senior High School.
The Diversity on Campus (DOC) exists to promote an awareness and understanding of different cultures on campus for an all-inclusive campus environment.
The organization affirms the value and dignity of all human beings and strives to provide opportunities for students, faculty, administrators and staff. DOC seeks to support institutional excellence through initiatives which advance the University’s diversity and strategic plans, while also fostering civility and respect for the value of all.
Mentor resident studies abroad
Gina Mulh of Mentor was among 19 students who participated in Baldwin Wallace’s “Ghana Beat: The Drums of Tradition and Change” study abroad program, a transformative three-week learning experience in multiple cities in Ghana, West Africa, including Accra, Kumasi, Kopeyia, Ho, Akosombo and Cape Coast, during the spring 2017 semester.
Mulh, a graduate of Mentor High School majoring in instrumental performance, completed courses providing an indepth understanding of Ghana’s politics and society as well as West African traditional music before going on the three-week experience led by business professor Dr. Christian Nsiah and music professor Josh Ryan.
The program provided opportunities for students to experience intensive traditional drumming sessions at the Dagbe Cultural Institute & Arts Centre in the village of Kopeyia and to study the political and legal systems of Ghana. They also toured several key areas, including the Ghana Parliament House, Central Business District, Cape Coast Castle and the W.E.B. Dubois Memorial Centre for Pan African Culture.
While abroad, the group also visited historical sites and major landmarks such as the Volta River, Wli waterfalls, markets, beaches, a monkey sanctuary, traditional villages, former slave castles at Cape Coast and Elmina, and West Africa’s highest rain forest canopy walkway at Kakum National Park.
Students selected for Order of Omega
The following students joined the Order of Omega at the University of Mount Union:
• Connor Funk, senior from Painesville.
• Kyle Shepard, senior from Perry.
Order of Omega is a national leadership honorary recognizing outstanding junior and senior fraternity and sorority members. New members must have a cumulative GPA above the all-Greek average and are selected based upon their leadership and academic achievement within the Greek, University and local community. Membership is by invitation only.
Area residents join Criminal Justice Club
The following area student is a member of the criminal justice club at Ashland University.
Kaeleana Marshall of Painesville, is a member of the Criminal Justice Club at Ashland University. Marshall is majoring in criminal justice. Marshall is a 2017 graduate of Fairport Harding High School.
The purpose of the Ashland University Criminal Justice Club is to conduct activities which will add to the intellectual, cultural, and social development of students majoring in criminal justice. The members of the criminal justice club have visited sites such as correctional facilities and crime labs in order to increase their knowledge of the criminal justice field.
The club also has heard lectures from guest speakers including criminal investigators, federal law enforcement agents, federal probation officers and local police officers.
Students graduate from Ashland
The following students completed their Ashland University degree requirements and graduated during commencement ceremonies on Dec. 16.
• Leslie Walker of Concord Township received a Master of Education degree during Ashland University’s commencement ceremonies. Walker majored in Curriculum & Instruction: Education Technology.
• Mary Ballinger of Richmond Heights, received a Bachelor of Arts degree during Ashland University’s commencement ceremonies. Ballinger majored in Communication Studies.
• Vincent Lester of Concord Township, received a Bachelor of Arts degree during Ashland University’s commencement ceremonies. Lester majored in Digital Media Production.
• Dominic Giunta of Willoughby, received a Bachelor of Science degree during Ashland University’s commencement ceremonies. Giunta majored in Physics. Giunta is a 2013 graduate of Willoughby South High School. Giunta graduated with Magna Cum Laude and Gamma Alpha Kappa honors.
• Aubrey Jordan of Chardon, received a Bachelor of Science degree during Ashland University’s commencement ceremonies. Jordan majored in Biochemistry. Jordan is a 2013 graduate of Chardon High School.
• Aidan Simenc of Willoughby, received a Bachelor of Science degree during Ashland University’s commencement ceremonies. Simenc majored in Exercise Science. Simenc is a 2013 graduate of Willoughby South High School. Simenc graduated with Magna Cum Laude honors.
• Rockwell Calvert of Kirtland, received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree during Ashland University’s commencement ceremonies. Calvert majored in Nursing. Calvert is a 2013 graduate of Kirtland High School.
• Jacqueline Pahor of Mentor, received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree during Ashland University’s commencement ceremonies. Pahor majored in Nursing. Pahor is a 2013 graduate of Mentor High School.
