Browns have first, fourth picks
The Browns clinched the first pick in the 2018 draft when they lost to the Bears on Christmas Eve.
Due to the epic collapse of the Houston Texans, they also have the fourth pick in the first round as payment for sending the 12th pick in 2017 to Houston for the Texans’ first-round pick in 2017 (25th, used on safety Jabrill Peppers) and their first pick in 2018.
The Texans drafted quarterback Deshaun Watson with the pick acquired from the Browns. Watson led the Texans to a 3-4 record and then was injured in practice on Nov. 2. The Texans lost eight of their last nine games to finish 4-12.
The Browns also own the first pick in the second round (their own) plus the Texans’ second-round pick from the quarterback Brock Osweiler trade. The Texans were so eager to dump Osweiler’s $16 million salary in 2017 they traded the Browns Osweiler, a sixthround pick in 2017 and a second-round pick in 2018 for a fourth-round pick in 2017. The Browns terminated Osweiler’s contract on Sept. 2, but were still on the hook for the $16 million.
Now the Browns are in position to fill two offensive needs in the first hour of the draft. General manager John Dorsey can take a quarterback with the first pick or, if he isn’t in love with Josh Rosen of UCLA or Sam Darnold of USC, he can take Penn State running back Saquon Barkley with the first pick and take a quarterback fourth — especially if he signs a veteran starting quarterback in free agency.
