Take a winter hike, novice or experienced

- Staff report

Lake Metroparks is inviting the public to get outside and experience a winter wonderland during the Winter Chili Hike program from 1 to 4 p.m. Feb. 11 at Penitentiary Glen Reservation.

A choice of hikes will vary in length and terrain, according to a news release. A short hike with flat and mild terrain is an option for the novice hiker while a longer hike with rolling terrain and a few steep hills is designed for the experienced hiker.

Both hikes will be led by Lake Metroparks naturalists, but hikers wishing to go at their own pace may choose their own selfguided hike. Easy-to-follow, weather-proof trail maps are available in the Nature Center.

All ages are welcome to participate in the Winter Chili Hike, though those under 18 are asked to be accompanied by an adult.

After completing the hike, participants can warm themselves by a campfire and enjoy some s’mores. They also can stop by the Kevin P. Clinton Wildlife Center to see native Ohio wildlife up close. They also can enjoy chili, cornbread and hot beverages served inside the comfortable settings of the Nature Center and listen to the sounds of live music by local musician Ernest Elshaw.

Hikers are reminded of the importance of wearing comfortable footwear which is sturdy, warm and water-repellent, the release stated. Hiking boots are recommended as the trails may be snow- and/or mud-covered.

Hikers also should dress in warm, comfortable layers.

Registration is requested for the Winter Chili Hike at lakemetroparks.com or 440-3587275 or 800-669-9226. A hike patch and a commemorative year hike patch, s’mores, chili and beverages are all included in the $10 registration fee.
