PLASTIC SURGERY
Paul Vanek, MD, FACS
Q: As a plastic surgeon, what is your opinion of implanting micro-chips under your skin? A: You probably saw in the news that Three Square Markets or 32M, a company in Wisconsin, will soon have 50 employee volunteers implant RFD Chips in their hands. This technology has been implemented for near field communications for proximity swipe recognition in credit card transactions. When implanted under human skin, these chips will be used to micro store purchases, open doors, facilitate copy machine use, and facilitate rapid login to computer systems. As innovation evolves, many other uses may follow, such as archiving an individual’s medical records. We can imagine endless future possibilities, especially with GPS tracking. This concerns me, and should be of concern to anyone getting an implanted device. Once a device is unwanted, their removal is a highly technical procedure, requiring a delicate extraction technique.
I’d like to announce that I believe that my practice is the first in the USA to offer removal of these implantable devices. Extensive experience with hand and micro surgery is required to remove these devices (the size of a grain of rice), as they have been placed in the index-thumb web space. Using fluoroscopic guidance, careful surgical removal must be performed by a trained hand/plastic surgeon to avoid serious nerve and muscle injury in this delicate area.
I feel compelled to mention that Revelation 13:16-17 may be interpreted that such a marked device in the hand is likened to taking the “name or number of the beast.” With the likely possible device usage as a requirement to participate in commerce, it may further point to the predictions of the Bible.
