Q:I want plastic surgery, and my husband wants facts… who actually gets plastic surgery?

A:Last year’s data is not yet finalized, so I can give you statistics from 2016, when 22.9 million Americans had cosmetic and surgical procedures performed on them, totaling over $16.4 billion. That number has increased every year for several decades. Breaking it down further, 5.8 million Americans had reconstructive procedures and 15.4 million Americans had procedures considered to be “minimally invasive.” This primarily includes the injectables and fillers, with brands such as Botox®, Juvederm®, Xeomin®, Restylane®, and others. These statistics come from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) who have been tracking plastic surgeries since 1992. They count patients as young as 13, but only 1% of all procedures are performed on teenagers, mostly for Rhinoplasty. 20-29 year olds received 829,000 total cosmetic procedures, of which 256,000 were surgical, the majority for breast enhancements. Procedures for 30-39 year olds grew at 4% pace last year, with a total of 2.8 million. The over-40 segment gets the most procedures performed, a total of 11.3 million people. About a million of these were surgical, and 10.7 million were minimally invasive.

Plastic surgery is growing at a faster pace for men, but females still receive 92% of all cosmetic procedures, with 90% minimally invasive. Surgical procedures for men comprise about 84% of their total.

As for ethnicity, Caucasians received 11.3 million cosmetic procedures, followed by Hispanics(1.6 million), African Americans (1.3 million) and Asian Americans (1.1 million). Asian Americans are the fastest growing group, increasing 6% over the prior year.
