Man accused of Madison Township standoff arraigned
The Madison Township man accused of an hours long standoff with police was arraigned March 7 in Painesville Municipal Court.
Jonathan M. Machin, 26, of 1854 Perth Road, was arraigned on third-degree felony weapons under disability, two misdemeanor counts of aggravated menacing and misdemeanor theft, according to court records.
According to township police, officers responded to a complaint of a woman being shot at about 10:15 p.m. March 5 in the area of Machin’s Perth Road home.
The woman had been in her vehicle in the driveway of the home when she was shot at. She fled the area in fear.
The woman told police she had been summoned to the residence by Machin and as she pulled into the driveway, he fired a smallcaliber firearm at her. She said she then fled at a high rate of speed, fearing that she was being followed. She believed there were six or seven people in the home with the suspect.
The adjacent residences were evacuated while the police tried to make contact with the residents at 1854 Perth Road. After several unsuccessful attempts to make contact by phone, SWAT assistance was requested.
After prolonged attempts, officers were eventually able to make contact with the residents. Negotiators were able to speak with Machin and he subsequently surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody at 6:46 a.m., March 6.
Madison Township police are still investigating the incident, but Chief Matthew Byers said March 7 there were no additional details available.
If convicted of the felony, Machin faces up to five years behind bars. He is currently in Lake County Jail on $50,000 bond with a 10 percent cash option.
