Cornerstone’s path: The Patriots defeated Maplewood, 60-27; defeated Southington, 57-33; defeated Cuyahoga Hts., 36-21. Buckeye Central’s path:
The Buckettes defeated Crestline, 61-19; defeated Monroeville, 61-24; defeated Lucas, 66-43.
For the record: Cornerstone is in its third straight regional, while Buckeye Central is in their second in a row. Both teams lost their regional semifinal a year ago . ... Cornerstone (20-5) is a young team, with only one senior and one junior. Nevertheless, the Patriots navigated through a very difficult schedule that included only one Division IV team (Lake Ridge Academy) and a bevy of other bigger programs like Perry, Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary, Massillon, Cardinal Mooney and Youngstown Ursuline. Four Patriots average between 11 and 15 points per game — Michaela Cloonan, Madison Cloonan (both sophomores), junior Lauren Harris and freshman Riley Stopp. But Kailey Tyna and Arianna Berry are also capable of big nights offensively. Cornerstone isn’t a deep team, but still plays a fast pace with tenacious defense. Effort is never an issue . ... The Buckettes (24-1) graduated four senior starters from last year’s team, but didn’t miss a beat and have won three tournament games by a total of 102 points. Senior Jenna Karl had a huge night in the district final, with 22 points, eight rebounds, eight steals, six assists and three blocks. She is the program’s all-time leading scorer and holds the record for most 3-pointers in a season and a career . ... The Buckettes’ lone loss was 51-50 to Carey on Dec. 27. They have won 17 straight since then . ... There’s no question Cornerstone has played a tougher schedule this year.
