Marshall stuns Wichita State in NCAA tourney

A day after Buffalo shocked Arizona, another No. 13 seed found the upset formula, as Marshall took care of Wichita State amid Day 2 of the NCAA tournament. Check out a roundup of the best games.

South Region

• Caleb Martin scored 18 points and made two huge 3-pointers in overtime Friday as Nevada rallied to beat Texas, 87-83, for its first NCAA Tournament victory since 2007. Nevada (28-7) erased a 14-point, second-half deficit and tied it at 68 when Jordan Caroline hit one of two free throws with 3.8 seconds left in regulation. The Wolf Pack came back again after trailing by four early in an overtime session that featured 34 combined points. Martin also had 10 rebounds and five assists. Cody Martin had 14 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Nevada’s Kendall Stephens had a team-high 22 points. Kerwin Roach had a careerhigh 26 points for Texas (19-15) and shot 6 of 10 from 3-point range. Matt Coleman had a career-best 25 points.

West Region

• J.P. Macura scored 18 of his career-high 29 points in the first half, and Xavier routed No. 16 seed Texas Southern, 102-83, Friday night in its tournament opener in the West Region. Trevon Bluiett added 26 points, and Kerem Kanter had 24 for the Big East’s regular season champs. Texas Southern (16-20) came in having won the first NCAA Tournament game in program history, a First Four win over North Carolina Central in Dayton on Wednesday night. • Kenny Williams scored 18 points and defending national champion North Carolina took its time before opening up, beating Lipscomb, 84-66. Theo Pinson had 15 points and flirted with a tripledoub­le for the Tar Heels (26-10), the No. 2 seed in the West Region. Playing for the first time in the NCAA tourney, the 15thseeded Bisons (23-10) shot well at the start and held an early six-point edge. They led, 33-31, with under four minutes left in the first half before North Carolina went on a 12-1 run to take control by the break. UNC won its 12th NCAA game in 13 tries going back to the 2016 tournament that ended with a title-game loss to Villanova. Kenny Cooper scored 14 points for the Bisons, who made just 7 of 28 3-pointers. • Admon Gilder scored 18 points to help Texas A&M hold off Providence, 73-69. Robert Williams and Tyler Davis both had doubledoub­les for the Aggies (21-12), the No. 7 seed in the West Region. The teams were tied at 50 with about 9 minutes left but Texas A&M responded with a 12-2 run to finally wrestle control away from the Friars. Davis had 14 points and 15 rebounds, while Williams added 13 points and 14 boards. Rodney Bullock scored 22 points with three 3-pointers for 10th-seeded Providence (21-14), which shot 44 percent but never recovered from A&M’s critical-moment burst.

East Region

• Jevon Carter scored 21 points, had eight assists and six steals, Teddy Allen added 16 points and No. 5 seed West Virginia overwhelme­d 12th-seeded Murray State, 85-68. The Mountainee­rs (25-10) pulled away in the second half and advanced to the round of 32 for the third time in the past four seasons as four players finished in double figures. Terrell Miller led Murray State (26-6) with 27 points. Miller made 8 of 11 shots, but his team hit just 41 percent. Murray State had won 13 straight games entering the NCAAs, the secondlong­est active win streak in the country. • Jon Elmore scored 27 points and Jarrod West hit a huge 3-pointer with three minutes left to help No. 13 seed Marshall topple fourthseed­ed Wichita State, 81-75. The Thundering Herd (2510) also got big shots down the stretch from Ajdin Penava and C.J. Burks to win in its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1987. Wichita State (25-8) got 27 points from Conner Frankamp. Frankamp hit a 3 with 44.1 seconds left before Marshall benefited from a critical call. With 36.2 seconds left, Zach Brown of Wichita State blocked a shot by Jannson Williams and the ball went out of bounds. After a long video review, the referees awarded the ball to Marshall, and Penava had a slam dunk off an inbounds pass. Penava scored16 points, Burks 13 and Williams 10. Morris had 12 for the Shockers and Shamet 11. • Kelan Martin scored 27 points and Kamar Baldwin added 24 to lift 10th-seeded Butler to a 79-62 victory over seventh-seeded Arkansas. The Bulldogs (21-13) raced to a 21-2 lead in the opening minutes. Although Arkansas wiped out that entire deficit before halftime, Butler took control again early in the second. Jaylen Barford scored 15 points for Arkansas, but the Razorbacks (23-12) struggled in the paint 6-foot-11 freshman Daniel Gafford managed only two field goals. • Carsen Edwards scored 15 points and second-seeded Purdue routed Cal State Fullerton, 74-48. Edwards scored 15 and P.J. Thompson added 11 points. Isaac Haas had nine points and 10 rebounds. Cal State Fullerton’s Kyle Allman scored 21 and Jackson Rowe had 10 points.

Midwest Region

• Miles Bridges outlasted Zach Thomas, scoring 29 points and grabbing nine rebounds to help secondseed­ed Michigan State hold on for an 82-78 win over Bucknell. Thomas fouled out on a technical with 6:06 left and finished with 27 points. Michigan State’s Cassius Winston scored 11 points and Nick Ward had eight points. Nana Foulland scored 20 points and Kimball Mackenzie had 10 points for the Bison.
