Beckham begins OTAs with Giants, no update on condition of ankle

-

The New York Giants have opened their first organized team activities under new coach Pat Shurmur with star receiver Odell Beckham Jr. in the building.

Shurmur said he hadn’t yet talked to Beckham, whose name has been prominent in trade speculation in recent months.

The coach didn’t know how many of the voluntary activities Beckham planned to attend or the condition of his left ankle. The ankle was broken in the fifth game of a 3-13 season that led to the firing of coach Ben McAdoo and general manager Jerry Reese.

Shurmur said he previously spoke with Beckham about a video that surfaced online showing the 25-year-old who wants to be the NFL’s highest paid player on a bed holding what appeared to be a hand-rolled cigarette. A woman next to him had unidentified white powder on a nearby table.

The three-time Pro Bowler has played in 47 games in his first four seasons, catching 313 passes for 4,424 yards and 38 touchdowns. He has averaged 94.1 yards.

PACKERS’ WR DAVIS ARRESTED » Police say Green Bay wide receiver Trevor Davis was arrested after falsely claiming to have explosives while checking in for a flight at Los Angeles International Airport.

Airport police spokesman Rob Pedregon said Monday that Davis was booked on a charge of making a false bomb threat at an airport and released with a summons to appear in court.

He said Davis was checking in for a Hawaiian Airlines flight when an airline employee asked him whether he had any explosives in his bag.

Pedregon said Davis said “yes” and asked a woman he was traveling with, “Did you pack the explosives?”

Airline employees called police and Davis was arrested. The woman wasn’t charged.

LIONS SIGN CASSEL » Detroit signed quarterback Matt Cassel on Monday, adding depth behind Matthew Stafford. The Lions also re-signed restricted free agent TJ Jones, giving Stafford another target in the passing game.

Cassel played sparingly the past two seasons in Tennessee and the Titans released him earlier this year, making him an unrestricted free agent. The 13-year veteran also has played for Dallas, Buffalo, Minnesota, Kansas City and New England.

He started 15 games with the Patriots in 2008 when Lions general manager Bob Quinn and coach Matt Patricia worked for the franchise. Cassel has started 81 games in his career, completing 59 percent of his passes for 17,449 yards with 104 touchdowns and 81 interceptions.

RANGERS FIRE TWO MORE COACHES » After firing coach Alain Vigneault, the New York Rangers have also dismissed two of his top assistants.

Rangers general manager Jeff Gorton said Monday that associate coach Scott Arniel and Darryl Williams were let go the previous day. Gorton said Lindy Ruff is still on staff and intends to speak with him before deciding on his future.

Gorton said the decision to fire Vigneault was made in the last week of the season. The announcement Saturday night came hours after a 5-0 loss at Philadelphia in the season finale.

The Rangers went 226147-37 in five years under Vigneault. They made the playoffs four times, reaching the Stanley Cup Final in his initial season in 2014. This season, they finished last in the Metropolitan Division, missing the postseason for the first time since 2010.

INVESTIGATION LAUNCHED INTO PARISROUBAIX RIDER’S DEATH » French judicial officials launched an investigation into the death of Belgian rider Michael Goolaerts during the ParisRoubaix cycling race.

Goolaerts died Sunday after collapsing during the one-day classic on cobblestones in northern France.

The 23-year-old Belgian died at a hospital in Lille, where he had been taken by helicopter from the race. Organizers said in a medical statement that he suffered a cardio-respiratory arrest.

Goolaerts had been airlifted to the hospital after collapsing about 93 miles from the finish in the second of the 29 cobblestone sectors of the race known as “The Hell of the North.”

According to Cambrai prosecutor Remi Schwartz, early investigation results indicate that Goolaerts might have fallen off his bike because of a cardiac episode, and that it was not the crash that led to his death.
