like Chris Reilly and Ben Connor in my career, in year 17, Those guys are just, I’m going to miss them. I wish I had them back next year.”

So far, he’s noticed each step back during practices to afford younger teammates more reps and provide advice. When Beachwood’s game April 14 was suspended in the fourth inning against Gilmour, Reilly was the last person to come in from the rain after raking the infield.

“As seniors, as a new coach, they don’t owe me anything,” Pohl said. “They’ve bought in from day one and they’ve really kind of made my job a lot easier.”

Pohl also anticipates the return of Nathan Burke, who missed the beginning of the season due to injury. Burke figures to slot into Beachwood’s lineup as the starting shortstop and No. 3 hitter.

On the field April 14, the Bison led Gilmour, 2-0, after the first inning. Gilmour took a 5-2 lead in the second as the Lancers capitalized on a pair of Beachwood errors to score four runs with two outs.

The inning exemplified the fundamental concepts Pohl’s stressed to his team.

“I’m using this phrase a lot, ‘Beachwood baseball,’ ” Pohl said. “What is Beachwood baseball? Beachwood baseball is not hitting three-run homers and making diving plays. It’s throwing strikes, making routine plays, doing the little things and understanding what your role is.”
