Riverside football coach Dave Bors is adding a new hat to his wardrobe. One worn by an athletic director.

Bors was approved as Riverside’s new athletic director at a board of education meeting earlier this week. He will be taking over the position from longtime Riverside AD George Bellios, whose contract is up at the end of the school year and will not be renewed.

“I’m extremely excited,” Bors said. “I get the chance to be an even bigger part of a district I believe in and my staff believes in.”

Bors has been the head football coach at Riverside since 2010, when he left West Geauga to take over the Beavers’ program. His record with the Beavers is 38-43 over that span, including a 3-7 mark this past fall.

“I am very grateful that the administration and school board is giving me the opportunity to see how this works,” Bors said. “I’m a sports guy. My wife and I were both collegiate athletes. I believe athletics is a huge part of the educational process.”

While Bors is widely known as a football coach, he has a vast history in sports on different levels. He coached both middle school and high school track and middle school and high school boys and girls basketball throughout his career.

His brother, Jeff, was a professional golfer who once qualified for the U.S. Open, and his father, Joe, coached multiple sports in the Munson area when Bors was growing up.

Bors and his wife Frances are parents to three young aspiring athletes in daughters, Gwyneth, Meredith and Blythe.

“Everybody knows me as a head football coach, but I’m a sports guy,” Bors said. “I support all athletics. I look forward to taking this athletic department to the next level and make sure we are first-level in all that we do.”

Bors officially takes over the athletic director’s position on Aug. 1, but anticipates work being done much earlier than that in coordination with help from Bellios.

Bors credits Bellios for bringing him to Riverside.

“George has been tremendous,” Bors said. “He is the one who first placed the call to me at West Geauga to come over and talk. He is an icon in the state of Ohio in terms of administration. I’m honored to take the torch from him and take this thing to the next level.”

Bors notes a litany of high points in the Riverside school district. Aa a member of the committees that helped bring artificial turf and a new weight room facility to the school, Bors said many improvements have been made to the athletic fields.

He said two new elementary buildings are on schedule to open in the 2019-20 school year, too.

The Riverside school district is now flourishing.

“It’s something we easily could have bailed on — and some did,” he said. “But we fought and didn’t give up. We’re coming out of the ashes now. Riverside is going in a hugely positive direction now, and that’s a credit to everyone in the community.”
