Katie Uterhark and her classmates in Kent State University Ashtabula’s Hospitality Management program are about to realize the fruits of months of hard work.

Uterhark, a Burton Township resident, has been heavily involved in planning for the annual Kent State Hospitality Management Golf Outing.

The 18-hole event employing a scramble format is scheduled May 5 at Quail Hollow Country Club in Concord Township

About 20 students from KSU’s Ashtabula and main campuses will be at Quail Hollow on May 5 to perform a variety of tasks. The event begins at noon with registration. A putting contest at 1 p.m. will be followed by a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m.

“We do just about everything, from setting up tables to checking in the golfers, getting the hole signs out on the course, setting up the auction and taking care of lunch and dinner,” Uterhark said.

Mandy Ulicney, associate lecturer for KSU’s Hospitality Management program, said the event is in its 15th year and customarily attracts about 80 golfers. The goal is to raise $10,000 to be used on scholarships and travel.

“For the students, this is one of the first experiences they’ll have in planning an event of this scope,” Ulicney said.

Graduates of this program often pursue careers as event planners or managers of restaurants, hotels and country clubs.

Openings are still available for the golf and other events. The cost is $115 per individual golfer. Payment can be made online at commerce.cashnet.com/KentFla4. Captains log
