Seeds set for upcoming district tournament­s

The postseason begins next week, and Mayfield (right), Chagrin Falls and Chardon have earned No. 1 seeds in their respective districts. Plus, this week’s Top of the Crop and area statistics.

Mayfield, Chagrin Falls and Chardon will begin play in the state baseball tournament as the No. 1 seeds in their respective districts. Teams open postseason play May 7.

The Wildcats were voted to the top line at the Division I Euclid District for the second consecutiv­e season. Mayfield, last year’s district runner-up to Mentor, is in first place in the Western Reserve Conference and owns a 11-5 record.

The Cardinals are again the No. 2 seed at Euclid, followed by No. 3 South, No. 4 Brush, No. 5 Lake Catholic, No. 6 Riverside, No. 7 North, No. 8 University and No. 13 Euclid. The Cougars, competing in D-I this season, were the D-II Jefferson District runners-up a year ago.

Kenston is the lone area representa­tive at the Hudson District, where the Bombers are the No. 7 seed.

Chardon, which dropped from D-I to D-II, earned the No. 1 seed at the Jefferson District. The Hilltopper­s were eliminated by Mayfield in a D-I Euclid District semifinal in 2017, but now head to Ashtabula.

Chardon owns a 13-6 record. The Hilltopper­s enjoyed the hottest start of any area team as they used a 10-game win streak to win 13 of their first of 14 games. Chardon currently rides a five-game losing streak. The Hilltopper­s are ranked No. 15 in the most recent Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Associatio­n poll.

No. 3 Gilmour, No. 4 Perry, No. 5 Geneva, No. 6 Hawken, No. 9 NDCL, No. 10 West Geauga and No. 11 Harvey round out area teams in a deep Jefferson field.

Chagrin Falls opens postseason play as the No. 1 seed at the D-II Euclid District for the second straight year. The Tigers are the two-time defending district champions.

Chagrin Falls is 16-5 and ranked No. 10 in the OHSBCA poll. Since the Tigers returned to Ohio from their spring break trip to the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C., they are 13-2.

No. 4 seed Benedictin­e joins Chagrin Falls in the D-II Euclid District bracket.

In D-III, Kirtland is the No. 3 seed at the Lakewood District. The bracket also includes No. 4 Wickliffe, No. 7 Beachwood and No. 9 Villa Angela-St. Joseph. Elyria Catholic, ranked No. 8 in the state, is the district’s top seed. No. 10 Berkshire and No. 11 Cardinal head to the Niles District.

No. 10 Cornerston­e Christian, No. 11 Richmond Heights and No. 12 Fairport make up area teams headed to the D-IV Fairport District.
