Cleveland Pops to play July 4 in Mentor

The Cleveland Pops Orchestra will be performing at the Mentor Civic Amphitheat­er on July 4 as a part of the city of Mentor’s Independen­ce Day celebratio­n.

They will present an array of classics as well as contempora­ry works, with pieces ranging from Strauss to Billy Joel, under the direction of Conductor Jason Seber, according to a news release. The concert will begin at 8 p.m., followed by a 25-minute fireworks display.

Admission and parking are free. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs.

Food trucks as well as beverages for sale will be available. Outside food and refreshmen­ts are permitted; however, no outside alcohol or glass containers will be allowed, nor will pets.

The amphitheat­er is located at 8600 Munson Road.

Dinner to benefit dog shelter, K-9 unit

A benefit dinner and silent auction for the Geauga County Dog Shelter and the Geauga County K-9 Unit will be 6 to 9 p.m. June 1 at St. Helen’s, 12060 Kinsman Road in Newbury Township.

Advance sale tickets will be $25 per person. No tickets will be sold at the door.

Hosts will be Totally Dogs 4-H Club; Geauga County Recorder Sharon C. Gingerich; and state Rep. Sarah LaTourette.

Attendees are asked to bring a bag of dog food, blanket, dog toy, or other pet-friendly item.

Humane Society hosts Pup Crawl

The second annual Pup Crawl will take place from 1 to 6 p.m. June 2 in downtown Willoughby.

The Pup Crawl is a bar crawl with special “pup crawler” guests — the dogs of Lake Humane Society — at each bar, according to a news release. The event will include the chance to win prizes in various raffles, a bake sale, drink and food specials, and more.

The participat­ing bars in downtown Willoughby will include: Sol, Barrio, The Morehouse, The Wild Goose, BRIM Kitchen + Brewery, Willoughby Brewing Company, Garage Bar, Frank and Tony’s Place, Nickleby’s Roundbar, Ballantine, Mullarkey’s Irish Pub, The 1899 Pub, and Corks Wine Bar.

Admission is $25 in advance and $30 the day of the event at the door. Admission includes drink and food specials and a T-shirt and drink koozie while supplies last.

All proceeds raised will go directly toward helping the animals at Lake Humane Society.

Citywide garage sale planned in Wickliffe

Keep Wickliffe Beautiful is coordinati­ng a community garage sale on June 2 for Wickliffe residents.

Sale hours are from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Residents must obtain the required garage sale permit at Wickliffe City Hall during business hours or online at www.cityofwick­liffe.com and fax the permit to city hall. There is no charge for the permit.

Participan­ts provide their own yard signs and tables for their sale. Once registered, addresses will be shown on the listing of garage sales participat­ing that day. Workshop to show basics of composting

The Geauga Soil and Water Conservati­on District, the Geauga Trumbull Solid Waste District, and the Middlefiel­d Library invite the public to a free and informativ­e program on the basics of composting.

“Composting 101” will take place at 7 p.m. June 5 at the Middlefiel­d Library, 16167 E High St. Attendees can learn composting basics and benefits, different composting methods, and how to avoid common composting problems, according to a news release.

Those interested in buying a wishing well compost bin can pick up pre-purchased ones at the workshop by mailing a check in the amount of $35 made payable to Geauga Trumbull Solid Waste District, 5138 Enterprise Blvd. Warren, Ohio 44481. Payment must be received by June 1 in order to be available for pickup at the event.

Crossroads Hospice seeking volunteers

Crossroads Hospice & Palliative Care is seeking volunteers to provide comfort, companions­hip and a helping hand to terminally ill patients and their families in their homes, assisted living facilities and nursing facilities.

Crossroads welcomes student volunteers who are 16 years or older to donate time to hospice volunteeri­ng. Volunteers are also welcome to help Crossroads staff in the office, including planning a “Gift of a Day,” which asks a patient to describe a perfect day and then makes it a reality, and writing life journals that chronicle the history, events and blessings of a person’s life.

Volunteers share their favorite activities, like reading, playing cards or other games, listening to music, or arts and crafts. They can also run errands and provide respite for family members.
