Change the date of marching band event

I just finished reading Sandra Goodman’s May 12 Letter to the Editor about the Lake County Marching Band Festival performance scheduled to be held on Sept. 19, which is Yom Kippur.

If the organizers of this event would look up the significance of this sacred Jewish holiday, they would learn that it is “the most solemn religious fast of the Jewish year.”

While I understand, to some extent, the demographic difference in communities, Beachwood City Schools and Orange City Schools are closed on Sept. 19.

Communities have changed. The world has become more inclusive.

At the most base level, what’s so sacrosanct about holding the performance on Sept. 19, a Wednesday? Would holding it one week later on Sept. 26, also a Wednesday, be so impossible? There is plenty of time to make this simple, thoughtful change.

I am not Jewish, but I have enough Jewish friends to know the significance of Yom Kippur. Aren’t educational institutions supposed to know better? Isn’t there a teachable moment here? As it stands, the decision seems really small-minded.

And to Kitty Stout, president of the Lake County Music Education Association, who somehow tries to justify this sad decision in a May 12 letter by stating, “This festival has been held on the third Wednesday for decades,” why not look up how many years Jewish people have celebrated Yom Kippur? Jim Collins played key role in Lake County

We were very sorry to learn that Jim Collins, longtime editor of The News-Herald, passed away. Unfortunately, we were out of town at the time and could not attend Jim’s funeral. Our sympathy is extended to Jim’s family.

Jim Collins was an outstanding journalist.

He was fair minded, but firm in his views and beliefs. Unlike many in the modern media, Jim Collins worked diligently to assure the factual accuracy of his articles and editorials.

Jim Collins greatly cared for Lake County.

His positive input and editorial advocacy on important policy issues benefited Lake County, its residents, and individuals living throughout Northeast Ohio.

Lake County and Northeast Ohio are better today because of Jim Collins.

On a personal note, Jim Collins shared his wisdom with us and many other elected officials. He made us more knowledgeable and effective legislators, when we served in the Ohio House and Senate, and better judges.

For that, we will be forever grateful.

Thank you Jim, you will be missed. Diane Grendell Judge, Eleventh District Court of Appeals Tim Grendell Judge, Geauga County Probate/ Juvenile Court

Pray and vote

America is in great danger. Tyranny is on the horizon. Mob mentality is trying to overrule our duly elected president.

I appeal to American citizens: We have the God-given power.

Ours is the greatest country on the face of the earth. Each one of us has the voice to make the difference, to overrule the evil mob, who tries to destroy the rule of the law of the United States of America.

It’s time for us to speak right now and stop this dangerous, evil tide and let our duly elected President Trump to do his job. We need to act now, before our voices have no value and tyranny takes hold. Let’s get the real information, let’s get involved, this is our country. Pray and vote. Please remember, you can make the difference. Dona Cipkus Willoughby

I see the Perry Nuclear Power Plant referred to as being 30 years old, as though that was “ancient” for such facilities. This may be true for the reactor.

I don’t claim expertise on that part of the discussion.

However, the remainder of the facility — turbines, generators, cooling towers, electrical transformers and electrical equipment to connect the output to the grid — should have considerable life left.

So, my question on the subject is: Has anyone considered the feasibility of closing down the reactors and constructing a new steam generating facility using the natural gas that is readily available in this part of the world?

I would think this would be more economical than building a new facility elsewhere. Colby Dyer Painesville

Trying to figure out the difference

I read recently in The NewsHerald about four people being indicted in federal court for their alleged roles in a marijuana growing and distribution ring in Thompson Township in which nearly 1,600 marijuana plants were seized.

Why were these people charged when some company is going to farm marijuana on Curtis Boulevard in Eastlake? Is it because the city and local politicians are going to make a buck?

What kind of example is this setting? Gary Poling Leroy Township
