Harvey students taking part in OSU accounting career program

A group of four Harvey High School students are heading to the Ohio State University for the Accounting Careers Awareness Program.

ACAP-Ohio is an innovative career developmen­t program designed specifical­ly for minority high school students. It is presented by the Ohio Society of CPAs and the National Associatio­n of Black Accountant­s and hosted at the Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business.

The program takes place for one week during the summer and provides the opportunit­y for a select group of students to explore careers in accounting and business while spending a week on a college campus, according to the news release.

Harvey High School business teacher Nell Rapport recruited students for the ACAP-Ohio. Taylin Nichols, Sarai Flores, Grace Romig and Felix Soto were accepted into the program.

The students will be introduced to accounting, finance, economics, leadership and management as minority CPAs and business leaders share their experience­s, provide tips for success and discuss educationa­l opportunit­ies, the release also states.

college fair for a first-hand look at the accounting profession and educationa­l options for their future. The program wraps up with an all-star awards banquet for students, parents, speakers and corporate sponsors where college scholarshi­ps and other awards are presented to attendees.

ACAP-Ohio participan­ts receive free room and board, materials, tours and mentoring during the week of the program.

Additional­ly, ACAP-Ohio participan­ts have the opportunit­y to earn one of several college scholarshi­ps. All scholarshi­ps are awarded based on essays written by students during the course of ACAP-Ohio. The essay topic is provided at the beginning of the program.
