Captains squander lead, lose to the Lugnuts

The Captains gave up four runs in the ninth inning, and eventually lost in 11 innings to host Lansing, 8-7. Captains reliever Riley Echols gave up the game-winning run on a single.

LANSING, MICH.» The Lake County Captains gave up four runs in the ninth inning and eventually lost in the 11th, 8-7, to the Lansing Lugnuts on May 31.

The Captains took a 4-0 lead in the first.

Tyler Friis led off the inning with a single and moved to third on Ernie Clement’s double. After Nolan Jones’ RBI groundout, Oscar Gonzalez hit his seventh homer of the year to make it, 3-0.

Jonathan Laureano capped the uprising with his fourth home run of the year.

Jones then homered in the sixth, his sixth of the season. He has homered in consecutiv­e games.

The Lugnuts tied the game with a four-run rally in the ninth.

In the 10th, Jones picked up his third RBI with a double and the Captains took a two-run lead when Laureano’s sacrifice fly brought Jones home.

But Lansing would not give up, tying the game with two runs in the bottom of the 10th.

Captains reliever Riley Echols (1-3, 4.91 ERA) gave up the game-winning run in the 11th on Norberto Obeso’s single after the Lugnuts started the inning with a runner on second.

Lake County starting pitcher Gregori Vasquez pitched 6 2/3 innings, giving up one run on six hits. He struck out five.
