Drivers, cyclists need to be aware

-

Thank you for the recent article on bicycle laws in Ohio.

As a cyclist in Lake County for nearly 30 years, I have encountered new behavior in the last several years that should also be addressed.

Many cyclists and pedestrians seem confused as to which side of the road they should be walking or riding.

A simple way to remember it (and I’d be happy to have the county steal it and plaster it on every roadway) is “on Foot, Face traffic…. on Wheels, With traffic.”

I nearly collided with a bicycle last year as I made a right turn and a bike was coming at me on the wrong side of the road. I’ve had runners with headphones almost knock me over when they were on the wrong side and decided to cross the street.

I see runners and walkers facing away from traffic without any way of knowing if the drivers see them.

Yes, drivers need to give us 3 feet leeway when passing, but runners and cyclists bear responsibility for being aware.

As my sons became drivers, I taught them to pass cyclists as if the rider was an Amish buggy — only when you can see what’s ahead and by giving them plenty of room. Too often I have had drivers pass me on an uphill when they could not see over the crest (same for around curves).

Taking an extra 60 seconds to allow the cyclist to complete their climb, could be difference between a slight delay and vehicular homicide charges.

Finally, cyclists need to operate their bike as if it is a vehicle.

Stop at stop signs and traffic lights, use hand signals, and obey all traffic signs and speeds.

On the flip side, many drivers have embraced the 3 feet law and I appreciate it. I hope we all can continue to make our roads safe.
