Tips for Reducing Stress, a Common Trigger for Digestive Issues
Do you find that stress and indigestion go hand in hand? If you do, it’s not just your imagination. As scientists learn more about the brain-gut connection, they are finding that there are a myriad of pathways that connect these two systems. Stress can manifest as stomach aches, heartburn, reflux or even irritable bowel syndrome. The gut can be negatively affected by a single, stressful event or an accumulation of stressors. We all know that stress can cause physical symptoms. Ever hear of a stress headache? We don’t fully understand these mind-body connections, but they surely do exist. We do not suggest that these digestive symptoms “are in your head”. They are real symptoms. If you think that your digestive issues may be rooted in stress, here are 5 stress-reducing tips: 1. Incorporate a form of relaxation into your day every day. 2. Know your limitations. Taking on too many responsibilities can cause considerable anxiety and digestive distress, so make sure, whenever possible, that you are not overburdened. 3. Journaling daily will help you gain an understanding of patterns that may be affecting your stress. 4. Talk through your stress with a trusted friend or family member. 5. Be willing to take action, reducing and managing stressors from your life.
