Kirtland Schools will be looking for a new treasurer to replace Daniel L. Wilson, who is leaving the district after 3 1/2 years.

The Kirtland School Board announced at its June 18 meeting that Wilson will not renew his contract that expires June 30. Wilson explained his reasons for resigning and spoke fondly of the district during the meeting.

“I very much appreciate the opportunity I have had to serve the Board of Education and the community of Kirtland — it is truly a special place,” Wilson said. “It was family needs and considerations that are requiring me to slow down just a little bit, but I’m deeply indebted to the board for the opportunity to serve,” Wilson said.

Wilson is a part-time treasurer with Kirtland Schools whose contract is for 18 hours per week through a shared agreement with Mentor Schools, said Kirtland Schools Superintendent Bill Wade. In the Mentor district, Wilson serves as chief financial officer, a position he has held since 2004, and will continue in that capacity.

Wilson has more than 40 years of experience in fiscal management of public schools, according to information on Kirtland Schools’ website.

Kirtland School Board Vice President Tom Meyer described Wilson as one of the elite school treasurers in Ohio.

“We’ve been very, very fortunate to have him on our team,” Meyer said.

Although Wilson’s current contract ends June 30, he has agreed to assist Kirtland with its financial needs in a transitional period, Meyer said. Wilson will receive half of his normal monthly compensation while serving in that role.

Meyer also discussed the board’s plan to find a new treasurer.

“I think our plan right now ... we’re kind of looking to find someone for an interim period, maybe up to two months, to allow us to have a process to hire someone permanently,” Meyer said.

School Board President Timothy Cosgrove said the district will not seek a fulltime treasurer to replace Wilson.

“The board is exploring alternatives, including a possible partnership with other districts,” Cosgrove said.
