Ohio Scottish Games return to Northeast Ohio
41st edition set for June 22-23 at Lorain County Fairgrounds
Scottish heritage will reign in Wellington at the Lorain County Fairgrounds from June 22-23 with the return of the Ohio Scottish Games.
This year marks the 41st edition of the Ohio Scottish Games.
Margaret McCullough, president of the Ohio Scottish Games committee, said members and volunteers are putting together final preparations for the event and that guests can expect a fun-filled two days.
“I think they thrive because of the love of heritage,” McCullough said. ”Once you know your Scottish heritage, and you learn a little bit about it, you want to help it grow.
“The Scots are a little bit more reserved, but we are just as proud with our highland dancers and our culture.” Eighteen Scottish Pipe bands along with 22 clans will be represented in Wellington for the summer spectacular highlighting a taste of Scottish music, food and dance.
With traditional staples including the caber toss highlighting feats of strength you can see athletes giving their all to toss, complemented by fiddle and highland dance competition, along with multiple demonstrations that bring together multiple elements of Scottish culture and pride.
A parade of all the clan tartans represented will be followed by opening ceremonies that will feature all 18 pipe bands performing in unison. Festivities get underway at 6 p.m. June 22, with a Ceilidh and dinner followed by evening entertainment from Andrew MacPhail, The Mclans and The American Rogues.
Concert tickets are available at the gate for $10.
Competitions get underway at 7:45 a.m. June 23, with opening ceremonies beginning at 11 a.m. and entertainment lasting until 9 p.m.
Tickets at the gate are $20 for adults, $15 for adults ages 60 and older, $10 for youths between the ages of 11 and 17, and children ages 10 and younger are admitted at no charge.
